What a WHOIS record shows
WHOIS is the public directory of domain registrations. A lookup tells you who manages a domain, when it was registered, when it expires, and where its DNS is pointed.
The company the domain is registered through, along with the domain's status codes, which show whether it is locked, on hold, or pending deletion.
The registration, last-updated and expiry dates. Handy for spotting a domain about to lapse, or checking how long a site has been established.
The DNS servers the domain points at, which usually reveal where the site is hosted and are the first thing to check when troubleshooting DNS.
Personal contact details are often redacted in modern WHOIS records under GDPR and registry privacy rules, so do not be surprised to see "Redacted for privacy" in place of a name or address.
